DUMBO buildings were built as industrial warehouses in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the walls reflect that history. Brick walls here are often double-wythe or triple-wythe — two to three layers of brick totaling 9 to 16 inches of solid masonry. Standard drywall anchors will not hold. We use SDS hammer drills with masonry bits and Hilti or Simpson Strong-Tie sleeve anchors rated at several hundred pounds.

Timber post-and-beam construction is also common in DUMBO lofts. Mounting directly into a reclaimed timber post or beam is actually ideal — wood holds screws beautifully — but we always verify it is structural and not decorative before drilling.

We also handle the logistics of working in landmark buildings. Many DUMBO conversions have building management that requires a COI before any work. We have that ready.
