Large TVs need serious mounts. Here is what we use for 75 and 85-inch installations across NYC.
Mounting a 75 or 85-inch TV is a different job than mounting a 55 or 65. These TVs weigh 60 to 130 pounds, require dual-stud mounting at minimum, and need two people to lift into place. The mount has to be heavy-duty, the wall has to be solid, and the hardware has to be right.
We install large-format TVs in living rooms, home theaters, and media rooms across NYC. The most common issue is not the mount itself — it is the wall. NYC apartments have every wall type imaginable, and a 90-pound TV on a full-motion arm creates serious forces that plaster, metal studs, or thin drywall may not handle without reinforcement.
The mounts in this guide are rated for 132 to 275 pounds, support VESA patterns up to 600x400mm and 800x400mm, and are built with heavy-gauge steel. These are not the $30 Amazon specials — for a TV this size, the mount is not the place to save money.
Weight capacity — 75-inch TVs weigh 60 to 100 pounds. 85-inch TVs weigh 90 to 130 pounds. Choose a mount rated for at least 150 pounds for a 75-inch TV and 200 pounds for an 85-inch TV. The safety margin matters because dynamic forces from swiveling or accidental bumps add load.
VESA pattern — Most 75-inch TVs use 600x400mm VESA. Some 85-inch models need 800x400mm or even 900x600mm. Verify your TV's VESA pattern before buying. A mismatch means the mount will not work at all.
Dual-stud requirement — Every 75 and 85-inch TV installation must go into at least two wall studs, no exceptions. The wall plate should span at least 16 inches to catch two studs at standard spacing. Some heavy-duty mounts span 24 inches for three-stud mounting.
Lag bolt specs — For TVs this size, we use 3/8-inch by 3.5-inch lag bolts at minimum, with at least 6 bolts total. Standard mount hardware often includes bolts that are too short. Longer bolts anchored deep into studs are what keep a 100-pound TV on the wall.
Two-person lift — There is no safe way to hang an 85-inch TV by yourself. The panel is wide enough that it is unwieldy even for two experienced installers. Plan for at least two adults during installation.
Prewar buildings with plaster-over-lath construction need special attention for large TVs. The plaster layer is typically 3/4 to 1 inch thick over wood lath strips, and your lag bolts need to pass through all of that and still sink 2 or more inches into the stud behind it. Standard-length hardware is almost never long enough.
Metal studs in newer NYC buildings and renovated units are a real concern for 75 and 85-inch TVs. Metal studs are thinner gauge steel and flex under heavy loads. We install plywood backers or use specialized heavy-duty toggle bolts designed for metal stud construction.
Concrete walls in NYC high-rises can actually be ideal for large TVs because concrete is incredibly strong. But you need a hammer drill, masonry bits, and concrete sleeve anchors. Regular drill bits and plastic anchors will not work.
Delivery logistics — getting an 85-inch TV into a NYC apartment often means navigating narrow hallways, small elevators, and tight stairwells. We recommend measuring every doorway and hallway before purchasing. We have had jobs where the TV physically could not fit through the apartment door.
