LG W6 vs G6: Wallpaper or Flush Mount?

LG W6 vs G6: what real owners say first, then the Zero Connect Box, the two outlets, the gap to the wall and which one suits your New York wall.

Pick the LG W6 if you want the thinnest TV on the wall with only a power cord at the screen. Pick the LG G6 if you want the same kind of picture with everything plugged into the TV itself, and more sizes.

What owners on Reddit say

For the W6

“A big reason I went with the W6 is that my Ethernet jack is on the other side of the room, along with my gaming consoles.”

— one W6 buyer, r/LGOLED (thread)

“The box is 20 feet away below the TV, unobstructed, and everything works great for TVs and movies.”

— one 77-inch W6 owner, r/LGOLED (thread)

“I have no issues with the connect box and gaming has been great. No latency issues.”

— one 83-inch W6 owner, r/LGOLED (thread)

“If you are planning to wall mount, the W6 is absolutely worth it over the G6.”

— one commenter, r/LGOLED (thread)

“The w6 is far lighter and easier to move when you need to move”

— one commenter, r/LGOLED (thread)

Owners who would think twice

“Unless you have a specific use case for the W6 or have a very gallery forward home, I would go with the G6.”

— one commenter, r/LGOLED (thread)

“I think what really annoys me the most is that the whole gallery experience is terrible.”

— one 77-inch W6 owner, r/LGOLED (thread)

“Overall, I like it but I am not stunned. I think I had high expectations.”

— one 83-inch W6 owner, r/LGOLED (thread)

So the W6 wins on the wall: thinner, lighter, one cord. The G6 wins on simplicity: no box to place and no second outlet. Both are LG's top OLED picture. The right one depends on your wall, your outlets and where your consoles live.

What that means on a New York wall

Does the Zero Connect Box really work?

The first question with the W6 is the box. Here is how it works.

  • Only one cable reaches the screen, and that cable is power.
  • Your cable box, consoles and streamer plug into LG's Zero Connect Box. LG puts all the inputs on the box.
  • The box sends the picture to the screen wirelessly.
  • LG says the box must sit within 30 feet of the TV.
  • The wireless link adds a little input lag. One 83-inch owner who games on it reports no latency issues.

Where the box goes matters

The box talks to the screen over the air. So the path between them matters.

  • Keep the box in the open. A shelf, a media console with an open front, or an open cubby next to your consoles.
  • Keep it in the same room as the TV.
  • Do not put it behind a thick wall. A thick wall can weaken the signal.
  • Do not shut it inside a closed cabinet.

We place the box with you on install day. We check the spot before we finish, so you know the picture comes through.

The G6 has no box. Everything plugs into the TV itself, including the soundbar connection (eARC).

Is the W6 worth it, or should you just hide a wire and get the G6?

Both sit flat on the wall. Both come with LG's flush wall mount in the box, and neither comes with a stand.

  • The W6 is 9.9mm thin, in what LG calls its 9mm class. LG calls it "The 9mm Ultra-Thin Wireless Wallpaper TV".
  • The G6 sits about 1 inch deep.
  • LG uses the same processor and the same panel technology in both: 4K OLED, up to 165 Hz for gaming, and Dolby Vision.
  • The W6 costs more than the G6 at the same size. You pay for the thinner body and the wireless box, not a better picture.

The real difference is the cables. With a G6, every HDMI cable runs to the TV. We hide them with our in-wall power and hidden cables service, from $599. With a W6, only power runs to the screen. The rest stays at the box.

If your consoles sit across the room, the W6 makes that easy. If everything already sits under the TV, the G6 is the simpler choice.

We hide the power cord

The W6 has one cord, and we hide it. You see a picture on the wall, not a wire.

  • On drywall, we run the cord inside the wall to a new outlet behind the screen. Our in-wall power and hidden cables service does it in the same visit.
  • The Zero Connect Box needs its own outlet too. LG says the box can sit up to 30 feet from the TV. Pick its spot before the install day, and we plan that outlet with you.

Will the W6 sound good on its own?

Not big. A body this thin leaves little room for speakers, and the sound will not fill a large living room. The G6 is slim too, so neither TV is built for big sound.

A soundbar fixes that. With a W6, the soundbar plugs into the box, so no extra cable reaches the screen. We mount it under the TV with our soundbar mounting service, from $69.

Both TVs can show art when you are not watching. LG calls it Gallery+: artwork, your own photos, or images you create, on the screen like a framed picture. On the W6, flat against the wall, it looks most like a painting.

One W6 owner calls the whole gallery experience terrible. If art mode is the main reason you want this TV, look at it in person first. If you want the picture, the W6 and G6 share LG's top picture engine.

Does the W6 sit flush to the wall?

Almost. LG's own note says: "Depending on installation environment, there may be a slight gap between the TV and the wall."

  • Expect a very small gap, not a perfect seal.
  • Tell us if your wall is uneven when you send the request. We shim the mount so the panel sits true.

77 inches or 83 inches?

LG makes the W6 in 77 and 83 inches only. The G6 comes in 55, 65, 77, 83 and 97 inches.

Use LG's size rule: measure from your seat to the screen in inches and divide by 1.2. From 8 feet, that points to about 80 inches, right between the two W6 sizes. Size regret on Reddit usually runs one way:

“I went with the 77 after briefly considering the 65, and now wish I had the 83.”

— one owner, r/LGOLED (thread)

The W6 is much lighter. Without a stand:

  • W6: about 44.5 lb at 77 inches, about 49.6 lb at 83 inches.
  • G6: about 72.8 lb at 77 inches, about 82 lb at 83 inches.

Check the box against your doors, stairs and elevator before you order. Tell us about the route when you send the request.

W6 or G6: the quick decision

  • Pick the W6 if you want the thinnest TV on the wall, your consoles sit away from the TV, and you can add an outlet for the box in the same room.
  • Pick the G6 if everything plugs in under the TV, you want one outlet, you want to spend less, or you need a size other than 77 or 83 inches.
  • Either way, plan the power before the install day, and think about a soundbar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the LG W6 come with a wall mount?

Yes. LG puts a flush wall mount in the box, and no stand. We use the mount LG supplies, or other compatible mounting hardware if you prefer something different.

How far can the Zero Connect Box be from the TV?

LG says within 30 feet. Keep it in the open, in the same room, not behind a thick wall or inside a closed cabinet. We place it with you on install day and plan the outlet for it.

What if the Zero Connect Box stops working? Does the TV have its own HDMI port?

No. LG puts all the inputs on the Zero Connect Box, so the screen has no HDMI port of its own. The TV depends on the box. If the box ever has a problem, contact LG support, as you would for any fault with the TV. If a backup input matters to you, the G6 has all its ports on the TV itself.

Do I need a new outlet for the LG W6?

Usually two: one behind the panel and one for the box. We add the outlet behind the TV with our in-wall power and hidden cables service, from $599.

Is the W6 the same picture as the G6?

Yes. LG uses the same processor and the same panel technology in both TVs. The difference is the body, the box and the sizes.

Is the W6 good for gaming?

Yes. Your consoles plug into the box, which has HDMI ports for 4K gaming. The wireless link adds a little input lag. One owner who games on an 83-inch W6 reports no latency issues. If you play fast competitive games and want the lowest lag, the G6 is wired straight to the TV.

Which is lighter to hang, the W6 or the G6?

The W6. Without a stand, the 77-inch W6 weighs about 44.5 lb and the 77-inch G6 about 72.8 lb.

Your worries, answered

A wireless TV on the wall comes with a few real worries. Here is what we do about each one.

  • "Will the box reach the screen?" We place the Zero Connect Box with you on install day, in the open and in the same room, and check the picture before we finish.
  • "I will see wires and need an electrician." We hide the cables and plan the outlets for the panel and the box in the same visit.
  • "Will it sit flat on my wall?" We shim the mount so the panel sits true, even when the wall is not.
  • "Will it get up the stairs?" Send us the size of the elevator, stair turns and door. We check the box size before you order.
