> Sonos Arc Ultra wall mount under the TV: what owners say, the 4-inch gap, full-motion mounts, Era 300 rears, and hiding the one eARC cable.

**Yes, the Sonos Arc Ultra mounts on the wall under your TV. Keep at least 4 inches between the bar and the screen, and know that the wall mount is sold separately.**

## What owners on Reddit say

### For the wall mount

> "I think it looks really good. The Atmos ceiling direction is not obstructed."

— one commenter, r/sonos ([thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/1u4xv2k/is_this_professional_install_okay/))

> "I'm a pro av installer. I do it exactly like this. Good job."

— one installer, r/sonos ([thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/1u4xv2k/is_this_professional_install_okay/))

> "Get the Sanus. I love it. You can pull out the Arc for Atmos content and then tuck it back in for the wife."

— one owner, r/sonos ([thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/1vh1929/recommendations_for_mounting_arc_ultra/))

> "Era 300s turned my already great Arc Ultra into really great and super immersive."

— one owner, r/sonos ([thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/1o2eebf/arc_ultra_has_blown_me_away/))

> "They didn't just add 'surround sound', they actually made the overall sound stage feel more full and natural and not like a sound bar."

— one owner, r/sonos ([thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/1o2eebf/arc_ultra_has_blown_me_away/))

### The warnings owners got

> "Your current placement is going to interfere with the upward firing speakers on the Ultra."

— one commenter, r/sonos ([thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/1w1xej1/sonos_arc_ultra_placement_ok/))

> "Per Sonos, you're supposed to have at least 4-5 inches gap between the TV and Arc."

— one commenter, r/sonos ([thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/1u4xv2k/is_this_professional_install_okay/))

> "I bought the Sonos Arc Ultra + Sub 4 setup recently, but honestly I'm feeling a bit disappointed so far."

— one owner, r/sonos ([thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/1tlgjkv/are_sonos_setups_supposed_to_sound_this/))

The happy owners got two things right: a clear path above the bar, and rear speakers. The owners with a snag missed one of them. The rest of this guide shows how to get both right on your wall.

**Want it done for you?** [Soundbar mounting](/services/soundbar-mounting) starts from $69 and can be added to any TV mount. Or [book your installation](/booking) now.

## What that means on a New York wall

### Hearing the dialogue

A flat TV has little room for real speakers. A Sonos soundbar under the screen fixes what you notice first: hearing what people say.

The Arc Ultra connects to the TV with one HDMI cable, on the TV's HDMI eARC port. That port is marked on the back of the TV. Your streaming box and game console plug into the TV, and the TV sends their sound down that one cable to the bar.

### Thin walls, neighbours and late nights

In an apartment, the person next door hears your movie too. Sonos builds two settings into the Sonos app for this:

- **Night Sound** is for watching late at night at a low volume.
- **Speech Enhancement** makes voices easier to hear.

Together they let you follow the story without turning the whole mix up. They are not a cure for every room. Try them in the first week, at the volume you really watch at.

### Rear speakers make the biggest difference

On its own, the bar gives less of the overhead effect. Era 300 rear speakers add much of the Dolby Atmos feel that owners describe.

> "You need era 300s for surrounds. They take the setup to the next level with 360 spatial sound."

— one commenter, r/sonos ([thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/1tlgjkv/are_sonos_setups_supposed_to_sound_this/))

> "The biggest improvement came from the Era 300 surrounds."

— one owner, r/sonos ([thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/1qs0ajw/3_months_w_sonos/))

These are Sonos's own specifications:

- **Era 300:** 9.85 lb each. Sonos sells an Era 300 wall mount and an Era 300 stand.
- **Sub 4:** 26 lb. It connects over Wi-Fi and has a 6 ft power cable, so it needs an outlet nearby.

The downside: rears and a sub add cost, and each one needs its own power outlet. Rears on the wall keep a small apartment floor clear, and keep the speakers out of a small child's reach. The same owner explained why they wanted no speaker wires running to the rear speakers:

> "With two toddlers running around, getting rid of exposed cables was a major priority."

— one owner, r/sonos ([thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/1qs0ajw/3_months_w_sonos/))

You can add rears later. Start with the bar, and add the Sub or Era 300 rears when you are ready.

### The 4-inch gap and the speakers that point up

The Arc Ultra has speakers that fire upward, for height effects. Anything that hangs over the bar blocks them.

Sonos's own guide sets out the basics:

- **Mount it below the TV**, with at least 4 inches (10 cm) between the top of the bar and the bottom of the TV.
- **With Sonos's wall mount, the bracket top sits 5.5 inches (14 cm) below the TV.**
- **Keep both ends at least 1 foot (30 cm)** from a side wall or anything that blocks the sound.
- **Never box it into a cabinet or a corner,** and never put a shelf right above it.

Under a flush TV such as the LG G6, the TV sits about 1 inch from the wall. So the TV does not overhang the bar, and the gap below the TV is what matters. See the [LG G6 and C6 we carry](/tv-sales/lg-oled).

### What size TV suits the Arc Ultra?

The bar is about 46 inches wide. A 55-inch TV is only about 48 inches wide, so the bar nearly fills the space under it. Under a 50-inch TV, the bar is wider than the screen.

Under a 65-inch TV or bigger, the bar looks in proportion and the sound matches the picture. If you are choosing the TV and the bar together, this is one more reason to go bigger.

### Full-motion TV mount? Then the bar must move with the TV

One Sonos customer asked us in their own words: "How will the Sonos mount? Do I require an extender?" Customers also ask whether a bigger TV later changes where the Sonos sits.

> "I use the sanus mount for arc bars on my installs. It allows you to push pull the bar in or out to a good level for aesthetics."

— one installer, r/sonos ([thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/1u4xv2k/is_this_professional_install_okay/))

**Our answer:**

- **With a full-motion TV mount**, use a soundbar bracket that hangs from the TV mount. The bar then moves with the TV. The downside: the arm now carries the TV and the bar, so the TV mount must be rated for both.
- **With a fixed TV mount**, a fixed wall bracket under the TV is fine. The downside: if you later switch to a full-motion mount, the bar stays behind on the wall.
- **A bigger TV later** may need the bar moved. The 4-inch gap rule is measured from the bottom of the TV.

Ask us about a bracket that hangs from the TV mount.

### What is in the Sonos box, and what is not

These are Sonos's own specifications.

- **The Arc Ultra is about 46.4 inches wide and weighs 13 lb.**
- **In the box:** an HDMI cable (4.9 ft) and a 6 ft power cable.
- **Not in the box:** a wall mount.
- **No optical port.** Sonos sells an optical adapter separately.
- **The wall mount is sold separately.** Sonos sells it as the "Sonos Arc & Arc Ultra Wall Mount". The older Sonos Arc wall mount also fits the Arc Ultra, but it may show from some angles behind the narrower bar.
- **The Sonos wall mount kit** has the bracket, a positioning guide, 2 knobs, 6 anchors and 6 screws.

Sonos gives two drill sizes: 1/8 inch (3 mm) for a wood stud, and 5/16 inch (8 mm) for drywall, plaster, concrete or brick with the anchors. Many prewar walls are plaster or brick, so the right bit and anchor matter.

You can see the Arc Ultra and the mounts we carry on our [Sonos page](/sonos).

### The one cable: eARC, and hiding it

The Arc Ultra connects to the TV with one HDMI cable, on the TV's HDMI eARC port. Sonos puts that HDMI cable in the box. Check the back of your TV for the port marked eARC before the install day.

A beautiful bar with a cable hanging under it does not look finished. Here is our policy for hiding it:

- **On any wall,** a paintable cable cover hides it. It is neat, but you can still see a slim cover on the wall. [TV mounting with cables covered](/services/tv-mounting-cables-covered) starts from $199.
- **On drywall,** we run it inside the wall, so nothing shows. [TV mounting with power and cable in the wall](/services/tv-mounting-power-outlet-cable-in-wall) starts from $599.
- **On plaster, brick and concrete,** common in prewar buildings, we conceal the cable with a clean surface cover rather than routing it inside the wall.
- Some customers are fine with it showing. One wrote: "I am okay if we need to have the wire connecting the sonos to the tv outside of the wall".

### Setup day

- **One network path.** Keep the whole system all wired or all on Wi-Fi. Mixing the two can cause setup trouble.
- **Room tuning.** Full Trueplay tuning needs an Apple iOS device. Quick tuning also works on Android.
- **Adding rears.** In the Sonos app, open the Arc Ultra settings and choose "+ Set up Surrounds". For a sub, choose "+ Connect Sub".

## Which mount should you pick?

- **Pick Sonos's own wall mount if** your TV is on a fixed mount and you want the bar flat on the wall, at least 4 inches below the screen.
- **Pick a bracket that hangs from the TV mount if** your TV is on a full-motion mount. The bar then moves with the TV.
- **Add Era 300 rears if** you want the full Dolby Atmos effect. The bar alone gives less of the height effect.
- **Pick power and cable in the wall if** you have drywall and want no cable showing. On plaster, brick or concrete, pick cables covered.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does the Sonos Arc wall mount fit the Arc Ultra?

Yes. Sonos says the Arc Ultra is compatible with the Sonos Arc wall mount. Sonos now sells one mount for both, the "Sonos Arc & Arc Ultra Wall Mount". The older mount may show from some angles behind the narrower Arc Ultra.

### How far below the TV should the Arc Ultra sit?

Sonos says to keep at least 4 inches (10 cm) between the bar and the TV. With Sonos's wall mount, the top of the bracket sits 5.5 inches (14 cm) below the TV.

### Can the Arc Ultra go above the TV?

Sonos says it can be mounted above the TV, but below the TV is best. Keep the controls facing up, and never mount it on its side.

### Does it work with a full-motion TV mount?

Yes, with the right bracket. Use a soundbar bracket that hangs from the TV mount, so the bar moves with the TV. A fixed wall bracket only suits a fixed TV mount.

### Can you hide the cable between the Arc Ultra and the TV?

Yes. On drywall, we run it inside the wall with our [power and cable in the wall](/services/tv-mounting-power-outlet-cable-in-wall) service. On plaster, brick or concrete, we use a clean surface cover.

### What size TV goes with the Arc Ultra?

The bar is about 46 inches wide, so it suits larger TVs. Under a 65-inch TV or bigger it looks in proportion. Under a 55-inch TV it nearly matches the screen's width.

### Will it bother my neighbours?

It can, like any good speaker. Sonos's Night Sound setting is made for low-volume watching late at night, and Speech Enhancement keeps voices clear without turning everything up.

### Can I add the Sub and Era 300 later?

Yes. Sonos pairs the Arc Ultra with a Sonos Sub and Era 300 rear speakers. In the Sonos app, open the Arc Ultra settings and choose "+ Connect Sub" or "+ Set up Surrounds".

### Is the Arc Ultra enough on its own?

It is a strong start. The bar alone gives less of the height effect than a system with Era 300 rears. You can add the rears later.

### I already have the original Arc. Should I replace it?

Not always. Rear speakers often change the sound more than a new bar does. The two bars share one Sonos wall mount, so a later swap stays simple.

## Your worries, answered

Mounting a soundbar comes with a few real worries. Here is what we do about each one.

- **"It will sound blocked or boxy."** We mount it at least 4 inches below the screen, with nothing above it, to Sonos's own guide.
- **"A cable will hang under it."** We run it inside drywall, or use a clean cover on plaster, brick or concrete.
- **"My TV is on a swing-out arm."** We use a bracket that hangs from the TV mount, so the bar moves with the TV.
- **"The neighbours will hear everything."** Sonos's Night Sound and Speech Enhancement settings are made for late, quiet watching, and we show you where they are.

[Soundbar mounting](/services/soundbar-mounting) starts from $69. The booking page shows your estimated total before you submit your booking request.
