> NYC building asking for a certificate of insurance? Learn what to send, what the document shows, and how we arrange it before your appointment.

## Quick answer

A certificate of insurance (COI) is a document that shows a contractor's insurance policies, coverage amounts and policy dates. We carry insurance and send the certificate to your building before the appointment.

- Ask management for its current COI sample or written instructions.
- Send us the exact names, requested wording and management's email address.
- Confirm that management accepts the documents before the visit.

**What residents on Reddit say**

> "my building requires that for any service like that, they have to send proof of insurance with my building listed as the certificate holder."

— one resident arranging a TV mount, r/AskNYC (<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/AskNYC/comments/p854vg/just_moved_here_trying_to_get_a_tv_mounted_in_a/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">thread</a>)

> "My building requires a certificate of insurance for furniture delivery, but the whole process is a little confusing for me."

— one resident arranging a delivery, r/AskNYC (<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/AskNYC/comments/tgclpe/certificate_of_insurance_help/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">thread</a>)

The first resident needed paperwork for a TV mount. The second faced the same question for a delivery. Both needed to know what to send and who should receive it.

If your building asks for a COI, send us its written instructions. You do not need to fill out the certificate yourself.

## Start with your building's rules

A co-op board, condo manager or management company may ask for insurance documents before work starts. A doorman or super may check that management approved them before letting an installer upstairs.

Buildings ask because work inside an apartment can affect shared spaces and other residents. They want evidence of insurance before allowing the work.

Ask management this question: **“What paperwork do you need before someone comes to mount my TV?”** Request its current COI sample or instructions.

Get the answer for your building. A neighbour's experience in another building does not tell you what yours accepts.

## What the certificate shows

A COI summarizes insurance information. The **policy** is the insurance contract; the certificate reports details from it.

Management checks the company name, the work address, the dates and the amounts of insurance. These terms can appear in its instructions:

- **Certificate holder:** the person or organization receiving proof of insurance. Use the name and address management supplies.
- **Additional insured:** another party included under the policy's terms. For building work, this can mean the building and its management named on the certificate. Management provides the exact legal names it wants listed.
- **Coverage limit:** the stated amount of insurance protection. We carry $2M general liability and a separate $5M umbrella policy.
- **Policy dates:** when the listed insurance starts and ends. Management checks that the dates include the appointment.
- **Description of work:** the address, apartment number and work planned, such as mounting a TV.

Being the certificate holder does not, by itself, make someone an additional insured. Simply typing a name on a certificate does not change the policy.

Some buildings also request an **endorsement**, a document that changes or adds terms to an insurance policy. Send us that request with the rest of the instructions so we can check it.

## How to get a COI from us

1. **Submit your booking request.** Choose your services and preferred date. The website takes no payment.
2. **Tell us the building needs a COI.** Send its current sample or written requirements, including the building's legal name.
3. **Include management's exact wording.** Send the certificate holder details and all names requested as additional insured parties.
4. **Give us the work details and contact.** Include your address, apartment number, preferred date and management's email address.
5. **We send the certificate before the appointment.** Check with management that it has accepted the documents and cleared access.

Send the complete request rather than a summary such as “the building needs insurance.” Exact names and wording help avoid corrections.

You can review our [TV mounting service](/tv-mounting) while you gather the building's instructions.

## How much time should you allow?

**Allow 24–48 hours for us to get the certificate back to your building.** Tell us about the requirement when you book.

Your building may need more time to review it. Ask management for its deadline and send that to us too.

Certificate preparation and building approval are separate steps. Sending a document does not mean management has accepted it.

Specific wording, missing information or requested changes can add time. If the appointment is close, tell our team straight away so we can check the timing with you.

## If the super asks for specific wording

Ask for the request in writing. It may be a sample certificate, a requirements sheet or an email from management.

Forward the whole document to us. Keep the legal names, addresses and requested wording exactly as supplied.

If the super's instructions differ from management's sample, ask management which version applies. Send its answer to our team.

Do not edit the certificate yourself. If management requests a correction, send us its exact comments so we can address them.

We can answer management's questions about our documents. Management decides whether they meet the building's requirements.

## If there is no COI rule

Tell us if management confirms that it does not need a certificate. You can still ask us for proof of insurance.

A building without a COI rule may still have rules about drilling, contractor access or work hours. Check those before choosing the appointment time.

If your building does require an approved COI and it is missing, the doorman or super may refuse entry. Contact our team and management to resolve the paperwork before the visit.

Also check any service elevator reservation and entry instructions. Insurance approval does not reserve an elevator or approve the work itself.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do you provide a COI for a co-op or condo?

Yes. Send us the building's COI sample and management's email address after you book. Our team handles the submission before the appointment.

### Does a small TV mounting job still need a certificate?

It can. A building may ask for a COI even for a short visit. Ask management about the work you plan.

### Is the certificate holder the same as the additional insured?

No. The holder receives proof of insurance. Additional insured status concerns protection under the policy's terms. Send us management's instructions for both entries.

### Can I use my own apartment insurance instead?

Ask management what it needs from the installer. Your own insurance document does not show our business insurance, so send us the contractor requirements.

### What if my building sends the certificate back?

Ask management to identify what needs changing. Send its written comments to our team. We will review the request with you before the appointment goes ahead.

### Can I reuse a certificate from another appointment?

Ask management first. The address, listed parties, policy dates or work details may need updating. Send us the current instructions rather than assuming an old copy will be accepted.

### What if I do not know the building's legal name?

Ask the management office or super for the COI sample. The legal name may differ from the name on the entrance. Copy the details from management's document.
